If you have collected two or three solar quotes in Darwin, you have probably noticed they do not match. One may be thousands of dollars higher than another for what looks like the same system. This guide explains what actually drives the price so you can compare quotes properly.
We have deliberately not printed a single “average price” here. Published figures vary widely depending on system size and equipment tier, and the only number that matters is a written quote for your own home.
What moves the price
| Factor | Why it matters in Darwin |
|---|---|
| System size | A larger system costs more up front but each extra kilowatt usually costs less than the first. Size it to your usage, not just your roof. |
| Panel and inverter quality | Premium panels and inverters cost more and often come with longer warranties and better performance in heat. |
| Cyclone-rated mounting | Darwin sits in a high wind region, so racking must be rated for it. This adds engineering and hardware cost, and it is not somewhere to cut corners. |
| Roof type and access | Tiled, steep or two-storey roofs take longer and carry more risk, which adds labour. |
| Freight | Panels and equipment travel a long way to reach the Top End. |
| Battery or no battery | A battery can add a significant amount to the total. We cover this in our battery post. |
| Electrical upgrades | An older switchboard may need work before a system can be connected safely. |
Rebates are already in the quote
The federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme discounts rooftop solar through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). The discount is generally applied by your installer, so it should already be built into the price you are quoted, and it depends on the system being installed by a Clean Energy Council accredited installer. Its value changes over time and with system size. Ask for the price before the discount and the STC discount as its own line, so you can compare quotes fairly.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Compare the same system size in kilowatts, not just the headline price.
- Check the brand and model of both panels and inverter, and the warranty on each.
- Ask whether the mounting is rated for your wind region.
- Ask for the price before the STC discount, the discount as a separate line, and confirmation that GST and all electrical work are included.
- Check that the installer is a licensed electrician and CEC accredited. In the NT, solar and battery systems must be installed by a licensed electrician.
- Ask who you call if something goes wrong in five years.
The cheapest quote is not always the lowest cost
A system that is undersized, poorly mounted or fitted with weak components can cost you far more over its life than the few hundred dollars it saved at the start. In Darwin’s climate, heat, humidity, storms and wind all test an installation, so quality matters.
